was the shooter who killed 13 people and wounded 32 others in a 2009 rampage. hassan is representing himself, but the lawyers assigned to back up his defense team have now suddenly asked to withdraw from the case. cnn's ed lavandera is on the scene. he's been in the courtroom. ed, what's the latest? >> reporter: well, this was a bizarre day of what we thought would be testimony, wolf, but everything started about 45 minutes late this morning. when the judge did show up and major hassan was at his defense table as well as prosecutors, and this is what is called the standby counsel, three attorneys who have been assigned to help navigate him through this death-penalty case, said they want to modify their standing, their role in this case. they say that major hassan is essentially working with the prosecution to ensure he gets the death penalty and that they can't stand by and what much that happen. major hassan objected to that, and before anythinged could be said, the judge shut it all down, saying that's a conversation that those attorneys would have in private. so everything has been shut d

fans can take a page from the business section. not very nice, though. >>> army major nidal hassan gunned down dozens of people at fort hood and now he wants to be the next to die. they want off the case because they say hassan himself wants to be executed. ed lavandera covering the court-martial in texas for us. ed, what is the very latest on this? >> good morning. we are waiting for court procedure proceedings to bedwgin this morning. this is after everything was dramatically shut down in the courtroom yesterday after the three attorneys that are essentially standing by major hassan's side, he is acting as his own attorney, but the military has invited three attorneys that help him guide through any legal procedural issues. they are not actually speaking in the courtroom because hasan has been doing it. those three attorneys started voicing concerns. hasan is trying to help the prosecution to ensure that he gets the death penalty and those attorneys don't feel like they can stand by and watch that happen. as soon as the attorney said that the judge shut everything down and put in

's not exactly clear what nidal hassan will do. finished telling the judge a while ago. he will continue to represent himself in the sentencing phase. the judge told him she thought that was unwise. the decision he continues to make. as you know, jessica, hasan over the last three weeks had very little input into the trial. asking very few questions he acted as his own attorney and assisting attorneys early on said they believe that hasan was working with the prosecution to ensure he get the death penalty. >> it is so unusual. ed, if he does get the death penalty it might be the first time in some 50 years we see that in a military trial. what would some of the family members you have talked to say they would look to happen to him? >> you know it is interesting. i spoke with the husband of one of the survivors. the victims, and testified throughout the course of the trial, not allowed to speak because the judge is not alug that to happen until the trial is over. but of the husband of one of the victims told me in his words that he thought the death penalty would be too lenient a sentence

, wounded 30 more in a massacre four years ago at ft. hood in texas. now there are concerns nidal s hassan wants to die. he's acting as his own attorney but he's is surrounded by a team of lawyers. they're giving him legal counsel throughout the trial. today they filed a motion with the judge saying they want no part in helping him achieve what they believe is his goal here. to die. why? that goal according to his lawyers is the death penalty. hasan has denied it standing up in this courtroom today, calling it, quote a twist of the facts. the jury was not present during that exchange. but in the end, the judge calmed a recess until tomorrow while she considers the lawyers' request to reduce their role in this case. >>> russia, now. russia officially snubbed president obama, canceling plans to meet with president putin for a summit in moscow next month. quote, we have informed the russian government that it would be more constructive to postpone the summit until we have more results from our shared agenda. it goes on, the rare diplomatic cold shoulder here seen as retribution. the two count
